To All My Queers <3
by Andrew Kravig, AMFT
I don’t know about you, but right now the world around me can feel overwhelming. This day and age can feel impossible as LGBTQ+ individuals, facing societal challenges and discrimination, on top of our daily personal struggles. In such tumultuous times, self-care becomes more than just a luxury; it becomes a vital tool for maintaining emotional, mental, and physical health. But how can LGBTQ+ people prioritize their well-being in a world that sometimes feels hostile? Here are some practical and empowering ways to navigate self-care while honoring your unique identity.
Create Safe Spaces, Physically and Emotionally
In a world that can feel unsafe or unwelcoming, having spaces where you feel safe, seen, and loved is essential. This might mean cultivating environments where you can relax, be yourself, and recharge—whether at home, in your community, or online. Consider building a circle of friends who are affirming of your gender identity and sexual orientation. These people can offer both emotional support and practical advice, helping you feel less isolated during difficult times. Maybe seek out support groups or online communities tailored to LGBTQ+ people for guidance and camaraderie.
Set Boundaries with Toxicity
LGBTQ+ individuals are often exposed to harmful attitudes or stressors, whether it's from family, work, or the broader societal climate. Part of self-care involves learning to recognize and set boundaries with toxic influences. This could mean taking a step back from people who invalidate your identity or removing yourself from environments that are emotionally draining. While distancing yourself can be difficult, especially with family or long-standing relationships, protecting your mental health should be your priority. Don’t be afraid to have tough conversations or simply take a break from certain interactions when needed.
Practice Mindfulness and Self-Compassion
Amidst the chaos, it’s crucial to develop mindfulness practices that can help ground you in the present moment.
- Deep breathing exercises, meditation, and journaling can provide valuable space for processing complex emotions.
- Self-compassion is key to navigating the harsh realities many LGBTQ+ individuals face. Practice kindness toward yourself, acknowledging that it’s okay to not always be strong or have everything figured out.
- Embrace the imperfections and allow yourself grace in times of vulnerability. Remember, healing is a process, not a destination!
Seek LGBTQ-Affirmative Healthcare Providers (Like Prospect Therapy!)
Access to healthcare, particularly mental health services, is essential for any individual’s well-being. For LGBTQ+ individuals, finding affirming healthcare providers who respect your identity and understand the unique challenges you face is crucial. This includes therapy, where professionals should be well-versed in issues affecting the LGBTQ+ community, such as coming out, navigating discrimination, and dealing with internalized stigma. Seeking out LGBTQ+ clinics or providers can offer a more understanding and supportive experience is often a life-changing step for any queer folk.

Embrace Joy and Celebrate Your Identity
In a world that can feel heavy, it’s easy to forget the importance of joy. Self-care isn’t just about managing stress—it’s about celebrating who you are and all the beautiful, authentic parts of your identity. Struggling with gender dysphoria? Become intentional about creating and celebrating moments of gender euphoria. Engage in activities that bring you happiness, whether that’s art, music, nature, or spending time with friends. Celebrate milestones, big or small, and honor your journey. Pride in yourself and your community can be a powerful source of resilience.
Advocate for Change, But Don’t Forget Yourself
Many LGBTQ+ individuals find purpose and fulfillment in advocacy, fighting for equality and social justice. While this work is necessary, it’s important to strike a balance. Advocacy can be emotionally and physically draining, so make sure you’re not burning yourself out in the pursuit of justice. Recognize that your well-being is equally important, and sometimes stepping back to recharge is the most powerful act of self-care you can engage in.
Final Thoughts…
Self-care is not one-size-fits-all, especially for queer folk living in challenging times. By creating safe spaces, setting healthy boundaries, practicing mindfulness, seeking affirming healthcare, celebrating your identity, and balancing advocacy with rest, you can nurture yourself and thrive. The road may be difficult, but with the right tools and support, you can navigate through the storm and emerge stronger, more connected, and more grounded in your authentic self.
You matter, and you make the world a more beautiful place! So keep being you!
We’ll get through this.
Together.
